Crust Skiing Photos from May 28

We broke through the clouds right as we put our skis on Wednesday morning on our crust skiing excursion.  Pictures inside and also a great link to weather maps that will help you figure out if it is cold enough up there to ski.

Link to a really cool weather map of the Brainard Lake area including live weather station data.  We've found that if it gets close to freezing in most of the area weather stations shown on this map, then the snow will be hard enough to support skiing. The snow is really clean and unusually smooth due to the late spring snow, so get out there and check it out.

How to do it: Drive up to the gate on Brainard Lake Rd.  Load up your skis, poles & boots in a backpack.  Ride a mountain bike up the road to Brainard Lake.  Put your skis on and make your way up to Long Lake.  The section to Long Lake is not the greatest as there are thin areas and you have to make your way through the trees, but follow the road up to the Lake and then it opens up and is really great.  From Long Lake, there are nice meadows to play in just East of the Lake and following the South shore of the Lake leads to a long, gradual valley to the West that offers a lot of fun terrain.
