TD Bank White Mountain Classic 30K

Jackson, NH

The course for this year’s TD Bank White Mountain Classic 30k in Jackson, NH has been modified to make up for thin snow.  With a couple road crossings and the course change, there will be more climbing than usual on the upper level of the course, making kick and glide durability essential.

This is a forecast based recommendation based on the NOAA weather and in accordance with our knowledge of the Jackson trail system and snow conditions.

Weather

Friday Night:. A chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -4. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday:
Mostly sunny, with a high near 13.

Forecast Based Recommendation

Saturdays glide thoughts:

Colder new snow is abrasive so the challenge will be keeping the wax on the ski. We have found the best way to do this is to harden the base with a very hard graphite. Look to SkiGo LF Graphite, Rex or Start Graphite as the best out there at getting this done. For a topcoat it will be tough to beat SkiGo C380 Powder straight or mixed with a hard HF Green. We like the Start HF80 or SkiGo HF Green in these types of conditions. If you choose to mix, we like to drip on the Green, then sprinkle the 380 Powder on top and iron them in together. For those who have not used SkiGo C380 before, it is a synthetic cold powder that is truly amazing in newer and colder snow conditions. For around $27 a can it is not very pricey either.

Topcoats to look at would be Holmenkol Cold Powder or Block, SkiGo C105 Powder or Block, Swix FC7 Powder or Block, SkiGo C22 block, Toko Jetstream Blue Bloc or Beta Cold Powder

Kick thoughts:

Again with kick, durability will be very important throughout the race. To insure that the kick wax stays on the ski we recommend going with a thin ironed in binder.  For a binder we like either Toko carbon base binder or Swix VG35.  For kick in these cold conditions, a couple of different waxes can produce some good results.  Some waxes to consider would be SkiGo HF Violet, Swix VR30, Rode Special Green, SkiGo XC Green, or Guru Green. The first three options can also be covered with SkiGo XC Green, Swix Polar or Rode Alaska if you find them to be a little draggy by themselves.

Recommendation

We recommend the following:

Base Layer: SkiGo LF Graphite or Start graphite

Race Paraffin: SkiGo HF Green or Start HF80 mixed with SkiGo C380

Topcoat: Holmenkol Cold Powder or Block, SkiGo C105 Powder or Block, Swix FC7 Powder or Block, SkiGo C22 block, Toko Jetstream Blue Bloc or Beta Cold Powder.

note: BNS imports Holmenkol and SkiGo waxes, and also sells waxes from Swix, Toko, Rode, Solda, Rex, Guru, Innovax, Magnar and others. We search for the fastest waxes for our customers and our testing is professional, objective and transparent. We make our best effort to test what we think is the best from each brand.  However, given that we are testing more options from Holmenkol and SkiGo, there is a bias toward those brands.  With this full disclosure, you can assess the legitimacy of our testing yourself. Visit Swix and Toko for their official recommendations. If you have any questions please contact us.
