Test Results and Discussion

We tested both kick and glide at various times today, but focused on the afternoon as temps were up to acceptable test levels for tomorrow AM, though probably shy of where the high will be. Once again we found that having a very hard graphite like SkiGo LF Graphite or Start Graphite as a first layer to keep the skis clean over this distance makes a huge difference. The HF layers also need to be very hard, and even though waxes such as SkiGo Yellow tested better, they accumulated dirt and slowed down after five kilometers. Thus, we are recommending what was second in our test because of its hardness, Holmenkol Matrix Blue. Topcoat test results are inside.

Solid results on Holmenkol and SkiGo

We started today at 6:30 with a topcoat test. We had already determined through testing yesterday that we wanted to have a very hard graphite like a Skigo LF Graphite or Start Graphite as our first layer. The fastest paraffin we could find was Holmenkol Matrix Blue yesterday and we wanted to stick with it today. The courses are really dirty in a lot of places and very abrasive, thus the harder waxes resisted the dirt better and were faster over the long distance.

Waxes used today and short discussion
Today started out cold with air temps during our first test at -15C and snow temps at -16C. We were trying to confirm that even at these temps and without the fog of yesterday that the topcoats we had recommended were still in the mix. After the first trap and feel test(done via headlamp) we confirmed that Holmenkol Speedblock Cold was still our fastest topcoat so we gave that recommendation out, sold some wax and got to work on a few skis for athletes we are helping out.   Read More...
