Wax recommendations for Colorado Cup races

It should be easy to hit a wax that works well for this weekend's Colorado Cup races, but a little bit tougher to find the absolute perfect wax.  Low overnight temps combined with rapid warming make it difficult to predict the snow conditions.  We have some feedback from DU coaches and grind recommendations inside.

DU Coaches report dry snow at Gold Run that is starting to get windblown with good snow cover everywhere.  While daytime temps have reached above freezing, the snow is not transforming, so the wax temps will be colder than air temps and snow temps may suggest.  The sun is at such a low angle at this time of year that even though the temps are climbing above freezing, the snow usually stays a lot colder than the air and does not transform.

For grinds, the ZR1 and Z40 should perform very well both Saturday and Sunday.  Cold, dry snow that has not transformed is where these grinds excel.  The ZR1XL or Z40XL  will also cover this range well.

Here is a link to Saturday's weather.  It looks like warm overnight conditions with cloud cover trapping heat.  Overnight low around 20F.

For Swix, we are recommending a layer of Swix LF Moly with LF6 as the final layer.  If your skis do not have a lot of cold wax in them recently, you should add a step in the middle to put 1-2 layers of LF4 under the LF6 to harden up the bases and protect them from sharp crystals.  A second pair could be LF7/HF7.  Brush the glide wax aggressively after the ski has cooled completely outdoors.  When skis first cool down to cold temperatures, they extrude some wax as the ski base contracts.  This brushing removes that wax and makes skis considerably faster.

Kick wax should be easy - be sure to clean the kick zone and rough it up well with sandpaper to maintain durability.  Iron in a layer of VR40 and let it cool overnight.  Cork that layer after it has cooled completely.  Always test kick waxes the day of the race, but I am 99% sure that the best wax will be 4-6 layers of VR40 on top of an ironed layer.  Due to the abrasive windblown snow, a top coat of VR30 may speed things up a bit.

Toko's wax recommendations for the weekend are here:

Sunday looks similar, although a bit cooler overnight.  LF6 is my pick, although it could get into HF7/FC7 conditions.  Be sure to harden up bases with LF Moly and/or LF4.  See Saturday's suggestions for additional recommendations on prep.

Good luck at the races!
