BNS Wax Recommendations

Minimize
As racers, coaches and service technicians, we've worked at every level of the sport from local high school races to Olympics and World Championships.  When we launched BNS, one of the first things we did was start publishing wax reports that included multiple brands.  We figured that the while typical wax reports from each company were useful, most racers want to know what wax is fastest - period - not just what is running best from each brand.

These wax reports are our best effort at providing objective, useful information for racers. We import several wax brands including Holmenkol, SkiGo, Guru, Magnar and Gallium, and we sell Swix, Toko, Rex, Rode and Start, among others. We try our best to test as many waxes as possible, but it is just not possible to test everything, and no test is infallible.  With this in mind, we seek full transparency in every one of our recommendations by discussing how we test, what the results are and what we recommend, so you can trust our work and decide for yourself how valuable our recommendations are.  We hope that these reports will be useful to you and help you make fast skis!

BNS Wax Recommendation

Patagonia Pursuit 2/12/12

Event Description – Patagonia Pursuit 12K Skiathlon with 6K Classic first leg before transition to 6K Skate.  Both the Classic and Skate portion of the race will use the same 3K loop.

Weather – From NOAA:

Today: Scattered snow showers, mainly before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 32. West wind between 6 and 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of snow showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22. North wind 6 to 9 mph becoming west.

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of snow after 10am. Increasing clouds, with a high near 35. Northwest wind between 5 and 9 mph.

RecommendationForecast Based Recommendation

We recommend the following:

Base Layer: SkiGo LF Graphite

Race Paraffin: Holmenkol HF Matrix Red

Fluoro Powder: Holmenkol Mid08, or SkiGo C105

Top Coat: Holmenkol Mid block, or SkiGo C105 block if temps stay colder.  If temperatures warm a SkiGo C22 top coat has the potential to be very good in the Skate portion of the race.

Kick Wax: Test morning of race, but Swix VR45, SkiGo HF Red, Rode Super Extra Blue, or Rode Super Blue should be in the mix.

Structure: Medium structure or “Red” condition skis will run very with expected temps and snow conditions at race time.  2.2 (S2-1x) would be excellent choices for grinds, with S1.3 (CV0) being a solid backup for Skate skis and C2.2, or Li2 would be ideal for Classic.  Hand structure will be very important with the high humidity conditions.  Finite V03 would be good choice based on snow temps today, but if conditions stay colder consider using a linear structure, Finite L04.

Testing Discussion – Snow temp was 24 degrees F at 7:00 AM this morning.  Last new snow was roughly three days ago.  “Red” condition skis will be ideal for the given the age of the snow and warming conditions on race day.  Holmenkol HF Matrix Red paraffin runs very well in the current snow conditions and both the Holmenkol Mid08 and SkiGo C105 powders will provide excellent top end speed.
